How To Start A Blog on WordPress?
So, Are you wondering how to start a blog? That’s Great. In this article I will share with you how to start with a perfect blog and what I learned along the way and how I started off on the right foot.
A few years ago, there was a huge economic disaster which hit my generation very hard. Having no income and no future career path, life was looking very bleak!
That day I decided to stop looking for a job that clearly wasn’t there and decided that I was going to start my own business. At first, I didn’t have a clue what this business was going to be, but it was pretty obvious that it should be online but never thought I would start a blog site.
I had no prior knowledge of website building or even how to start a blog? And how to make money blogging? But then I taught myself for FREE. There was a definite learning curve to do this, but every step of the way, it was obvious that this information would help me throughout my life.
Since that time I started writing blogs and made money blogging. Never underestimate what your potential blog could achieve. I am no technical genius, there are still things that I am learning every day, but starting with a blog has given me a future that I look forward too. There is nothing better than working from home by doing a job that you love, that lets you spend time with your family.
You will be amazed to know how simple and easy it is to start a blog when you experience the sense of achievement.
Here is How to Start a Blog in just 4 Steps.
I made this process as short and simple for you as possible. So here’s what you need to know before you get started.
- Decide what to blog about
- Register a domain name and hosting
- Choose a blogging platform
- Start growing your blog
Step 1 – Decide What to Blog About
A blog is diary style text entries of thoughts, ideas, passion, experiences and more. All at one place on the web. But when it comes to determine a topic that what should I start a blog about, most people gets totally blank. If you are a business, this step is easy for you to a decision. In my opinion, you must start a blog on a topic that stokes your passion that is because if you start a blog on your passion that will never let you back off. A blog can never be your hobby because a blog is tool for people to gather helpful information.
Some key points to remember before you start a blog :
- A reader will always want to learn something new.
- A reader is having a goal and you are a helping hand.
- A reader must be kept entertained while reading your blogs.
Step 2 – Register a domain name and hosting
Before we can start making any money from blogging, we need to get you online so that you can start a blog. To make your blog live you are supposed to have a domain name and a hosting.
Register a domain name
For those of you that don’t know what a domain is, it is the address of your website, which is referred to as a URL. These are most commonly recognized as ending in “.com” “.in” “.co.in” but there are many others out there, such as ‘.biz’, ‘.org’, ‘.co.uk’, ‘.jp’, etc. My website’s domain name is ‘digimarketingclasses.com‘
Tips when choosing a domain name
- Try to limit your domain name to two or three short words so that it becomes easy to remember.
- Best domain names are descriptive of what your website is about. If you are a photographer then your domain name must be Yournameportfolio.com
- Make it easy to type. You don’t want other people getting your traffic if someone types in another website by mistake!
- Avoid using hyphens or punctuation marks within your url.
- Use a domain name that ends in with ‘.com’ not any of the other because people are most likely to find .com extensions.
How to Register a Domain Name
You register a domain name by paying a small fee to a registering company. This gives you full ownership of that domain for the set period of time that you have paid for and then you are able to start a blog of your own.
You should make sure that you register your domain name at a proper registering company, so that they will look after your domain and provide any support that you may need. I personally use a company called GoDaddy for all my domains. They are the largest domain registrar in the world and I have never had a problem with them.
You don’t have to take my words to start a blog or a website for it and use GoDaddy (though I highly recommend you do). Check out this list of alternate domain registrars.
What is a Hosting?
So, now that you know how to register a domain name you need to know how people can find you. This is where you need a hosting provider.
A Hosting provider gives you online space to place all of your files that are needed to get your blog online. You rent disk space and bandwidth from your hosting provider. This way, your site is available for people to visit 24 hours a day.
Disk space is the space where your website is stored in. Every single letter from your site is stored here.
Bandwidth is the total amount of data that the host server allows your website to send in a month. The more traffic that your site gets, the more bandwidth your site uses.
Choosing not to use a host requires you to invest in your own dedicated server which is much more complicated and costly than using a hosting provider. This is advantageous for websites that you have huge numbers of traffic. Having your own dedicated server, instead of a shared host can prevent a site from slowing down.
There are many different hosting providers that are available online. You need to choose one that is right for the job.
You need to find a host that offers good support to you. This is very important because should any problems arise with your website, you need to be able to get in contact with their support team who will help you out. Finding a host that offers unlimited disk space and bandwidth will be beneficial because you started the blog not for a short period but for the long run as your website grows.
Step 3 – Choosing a Blogging platform
There are many platforms that can be used to start a blog like Blogger (from Google), tumblr, weebly and many more. I am personally using WordPress for all my blogs from the day I started blogging reason being blogging on WordPress is more user-friendly and powerful.
People are not aware with the fact that even WordPress gives you 2 options before you start a blog – Worpress.com (Hosted) and WordPress.org (Self-hosted).
A Self-hosted WordPress is the one you need to go for and you gain the access to it when you get the hosting from your hosting service provider without paying them any extra with all required features.
Some limitations on free blogging platforms are :
- They limit the traffic to your blogs and will never let you grow.
- When you start a blog your access will be limited as they are the owner.
- They can block your account anytime for any reason and you will be nowhere.
- They either limit or give you no space to place neither affiliation nor Google Adsense ads and making money blogging without ads is next to impossible.
- You actually cannot have your own domain name extension (.com or .in). The company name may appear at the end making your domain name like weird.
All these limitations apply even on hosted WordPress.
To make the best combination, it is always suggested to go with Godaddy and either of Hostgator or Bluehost.
Step 4 – Start growing your blog
Congratulations! Now that you have set up your blog and you are about to start a blog post.
Before you start a blog post, First, I will suggest you to create a proper About us and Second, a Contact Us page on your blogging site so that anyone can easily get to know who you are? What exactly you blog about? What experience you hold? And If anyone wants to get in touch with you how they can do that?
People loves to see the face behind the Blog.
About us and Contact us page gains the trust of a visitor. Because on these pages a new visitor will get to know you and thereafter they can start engaging with your blog post. Once people started engaging with your blogs that is when you are done and your blog is growing, getting more traffic, making it easier for you to make money blogging.
